Floor epoxy buying guide
Our floor system for garages, basements and shops has four parts: the Moisture Vapor Barrier (MVB) primer, the floor epoxy base coat, decorative flakes and the Polyaspartic top coat. The floor epoxy calculator gives the amount of each product for your floor area.
Prepare the concrete
The concrete must be clean and dry, with no grease or oil. Grind very smooth concrete, then vacuum and mop.
- Moisture test: after the prep, and at least 24 to 48 hours after any wet step (even a mop), tape an 18 to 24 inch square of 6-mil clear plastic to the floor, airtight, for 24 to 48 hours.
- Condensation or darker concrete under the plastic: apply the MVB primer first. The floor stays dry: start with the floor epoxy base coat.
- The MVB primer covers about 115 sq ft per gallon. Apply the floor epoxy 8 to 10 hours after the primer, when it is slightly tacky but mostly dry.
Base coat, flakes and top coat
Read our floor planning guide and our flakes color and coverage guide before you buy.
- Floor epoxy comes in Clear and Light Gray, in 1.5, 3 and 6 gallon kits. Mix 2 parts resin (A) to 1 part hardener (B) by volume for about 3 minutes. The working time is about 45 minutes, but only about 20 minutes if the epoxy stays in the mixing container.
- Add a Liquid Solid Pigment that matches your flakes: 1 bottle per 1.5 gallons of epoxy (resin and hardener together).
- Broadcast the flakes right after the base coat. After 8 to 12 hours, remove the loose flakes. Apply the Polyaspartic top coat at least 12 hours after the base coat.
- Flakes (1/4 inch) come in 10, 20 and 40 lb sizes. As a full broadcast, they cover about 65, 125 and 250 sq ft. A partial broadcast covers much more.
- A 2 gallon Polyaspartic kit covers about 250 to 300 sq ft over flakes, or up to about 400 sq ft over primer. It is UV stable and needs 3 days for a full cure.
Complete floor kits
Our Heavy Flakes Coverage and Full Flakes Coverage kits are for floors of 300 or 600 sq ft. They have the floor epoxy, pigment, flakes and Polyaspartic, plus the main tools.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the MVB primer?
Do the plastic sheet test. If you see condensation or darker concrete under the plastic, apply the MVB primer first. If the floor stays dry, you can start with the floor epoxy base coat. If the slab has dampness that comes back, or leaks, contact us before you choose a system.
How many flakes do I need?
For a full broadcast, 10 lb covers about 65 sq ft, 20 lb about 125 sq ft and 40 lb about 250 sq ft. A partial broadcast uses fewer flakes. The floor epoxy calculator does the math for you.
